videoblog — grading and compositing http://www.raffaz.net/videoblog.php

Videoblog is an independent short film shot in full HD 1080. I did all the color grading and some basic compositing. I used strong colors to emphasize every different scene. I especially warmed up the skin tones both in external and internal shots, and I used a dark atmosphere in the bondage sessions scenes. It was great to work on colors in HD, a really different story than the usual DV PAL workflow. You can also see my intro titles and credits work on this short film. pinhole http://www.raffaz.net/pinhole.php

These photos were part of my photography exam at CAMPIVISIVI. I built a pinhole camera made of cardboard, and I took black and white photos with it. Obtaining the right exposure and timing was not an easy task, but I had success with a bunch of photos. Then I tried to push the pinhole technique to its digital counterpart — I tried it on my digital SLR camera. I used a Nikon lens cap and I made a very small hole in the center. The results were great, even if there's a lot of room for improvements on the technical side. Copyright © 2004 Raffaele Mariotti

analisi logica http://www.raffaz.net/analisilogica.php

Analisi Logica is a short video based on Exercises in Style by Raymond Queneau. This book contains 99 versions of the same story, each one written in a different style. The task for my exam was to choose one version, and create a visual interpretation of it. Analisi Logica means logical analysis, so the text is very descriptive and I tried to stick to the text as much as possible. I used the timelapse technique; I shot with my Nikon D70 (like I did in Landscapes), but this time I also tried stop-motion photography for the characters, over a bluescreen. Then I added titles and motion graphic elements to create a surreal and unique mood for the narration. Last but not least a voice over was added, to better follow the text. bracket & cracket — fonts and type specimen http://www.raffaz.net/bracket.php

Bracket and Cracket are two fonts that I designed during the Type Design course at CAMPIVISIVI. The first is a sans-serif font, while the other has an handwriting style. This is my first attempt at designing typefaces, and the result suffered from the fact that the available time wasn't enough to complete the entire font. For the Bracket font I started by drawing letters with a brush and black ink, then I gradually refined the shapes with pens and white ink. When the final letters were good enough, I scanned them and manually digitized them into letters. The Cracket font was a completely different story — just think of it as the “Mr. Hyde” version of Bracket. They don't share any similar feature, and they couldn't be more different. I designed Cracket in a single day, using a Wacom tablet drawing the letters directly into my Mac. Using different pressure strokes I obtained the look of an handwriting, and because the whole process was a lot quicker than for Bracket, I easily designed a lot more letters and extra glyphs. The two type specimens are printed in low quality recycled paper. Copyright © 2006 Raffaele Mariotti

campivisivi website http://www.raffaz.net/campivisivi.php

This is a website for the Biennial Specialistic Course at the Academy of Fine Arts of Urbino (Italy). It had to be both a container for informations about the course but also a sort of showcase for the students' works. So it included 4 main sections where you could find infos about teachers, students, subjects, works, meetings, etc. I chose a clean design where each section was immediately visible and expanded. 4 different colors helped to visually separate the sections, and spread along the titles and horizontal lines. The thumbnails in the galleries had a strong greyscale look, and they were collapsed and borderless — but they had a colored thumbnail on the rollover status. Now the website has been redesigned from the ground up, but you can still check the old version. contact photos http://www.raffaz.net/contactphotos.php

These photos were part of my photography exam at CAMPIVISIVI. The task was to produce different photograms with different objects. Instead of using the objects as a shape and the light as a source, I directly used the light both as an object and a source. I assembled fiber optics and an electric torch to obtain a sort of light emitting brush, then I used that thing over photographic paper in a darkroom. I could use it by literally painting on the paper, or turning it on and off repeatedly. By varying the amount of light and exposure time I achieved different results. I also experimented with the light emitted from a cellphone, and I tried to use the developing liquids to paint the paper. I really liked the results, and I used some of these big prints as the main artwork design for Dynamic Lights' album “Shape” as you can see in its page. Copyright © 2004 Raffaele Mariotti

These photos are featured in the 2007/2008 edition of the student's guide “Studiare ad Urbino”. The various places are in the town of Urbino and they are related to University life, such as classrooms, colleges, food services, administration, labs. I wanted to achieve a natural look, so I used no additional lighting. I took two photos for each set, one with the person and the frame, and another empty one. The various places are in the town of Urbino and they are related to University life, such as classrooms, colleges, food services, administration, labs. I shot the photos with an empty white panel — the text was added later in post-production, this way we had more time to choose the font (Franklin Gothic) and other details. mannequins http://www.raffaz.net/mannequins.php

I find mannequins very attractive — not that I'm a mannequin fetishist, but I really think they are eye-catching and they have something to say. There's something special in their glance, and they seem frozen in time — but if you stare at them, you can almost see their lips starting to speak. I took these photos during my 1-week tour with my band Dynamic Lights. We played as support to Nightingale during their 10th Anniversary Tour. We went through a lot of cities in Germany, Denmark, The Netherlands and other places, and if you're interested you can check our Tour photos on Dynamic Lights' website. And yes, you read right, I used a compact Canon camera because my Nikon D70 was out for repair during that time. Too bad. Copyright © 2005 Raffaele Mariotti

extreme loop http://www.raffaz.net/extremeloop.php

I made this video for an exam, I found some driving footage on the net — there was this guy driving a BMW on the Nürburgring. Then I captured the opensource “Racer” videogame messing around with camera movements and following the song. The neat thing is that I used the same track and the same car of the real video, syncing the sequences. That's pretty much everything about it. Enjoy the ride. landscapes http://www.raffaz.net/landscapes.php

as soon as I bought my Nikon D70 after its release in spring 2004, I wanted to try the timelapse technique. I am fascinated by this kind of filming, especially by watching beautiful movies such as Koyaanisqatsi and Baraka, so I just had to film my own timelapse scenes. I spent several months trying to achieve the most interesting images in various locations (including Denmark) and then I edited the whole thing, using a great drone soundtrack by Jonathan Coleclough. Working with a digital camera allowed me to obtain high resolution photos, and I was able to edit this video in full HD 1920 x 1080 format — the detail and the color depth are awesome, and a pleasure to work with. Landscapes screened at Pesaro International Film Fest in July 2004 and won the first prize at the Premio Pascucci (Italy) in 2005. lascritturainventata — booklet http://www.raffaz.net/lascritturainventata.php

This booklet contains brush strokes used as form of writing. This was a study about writing and calligraphy during the Type Design course at CAMPIVISIVI. “Lascritturainventata” means “The invented writing” in Italian and I used it as a title because the task was to invent a kind of writing without trying to design letters and alphabets. This seemed an easy task at first, but it's quite difficult to come up with fresh ideas without being tempted to draw letters, at least for me. So I finally tried some brush strokes by using the brush in an unconventional way — and here's the result. I used an embossed paper for the pages and a parchment paper cover, because I like the tactile feeling of materials like these and because it creates a nice contrast with the strong black strokes inside. light particle http://www.raffaz.net/lightparticle.php

light particle started as an experiment by producing a video based on the “feel” of the soundtrack. The music is an original piece composed by Alessandro Petrolati, it is completely synthetic and computer generated. It is also very dynamic, with large pads, an extended range of frequencies and a great mix of textures and sounds. So what I did was basically try to visualize it by using colors, lights, and moods to match the feeling of the track. I used both synthetic images and photos composited together, along with some heavily filtered video. Light Particle screened at Pesaro International Film Fest in July 2004. luana prontomoda http://www.raffaz.net/luanaprontomoda.php

This work is a video production about a theatrical show. The stage art setup was very interesting, consisting of three big orange plastic stripes and a chair. Everything else in this little theater, including the walls and the ceiling, was black. Only an actress and a viiolin player were present on stage. So this work was quite interesting, both during the shooting and during the editing. You can also check my work on the DVD authoring, credits, compositing and photos of Luana Prontomoda. Here's the DVD menu for Luana Prontomoda. It's a simulation of the navigation through the buttons, and I also included the chapters menu. These photos are featured in the “Luana Prontomoda” DVD packaging. I shot a bunch of photos during reahearsals of the show, and they were chosen for the final DVD artwork. qb http://www.raffaz.net/qb.php

the word “qb” has the same pronounciation of “cubi”, which means “cubes”. You guessed it, this is an experimental video about cubes. It all started during one of my courses at CAMPIVISIVI; I was trying to mix traditional clay animation with digital compositing. I basically shot stop-motion sequences of clay cubes, then I used text emoticons like O_O , ^_^ , #_# and others to give a human facial expression to the cubes. While I was working on it, everything came in its own way and I decided to create a surreal situation where the main character emits a loud, long, enormous burp and he gets applauses and respect from other cubes. To make everything look sillier, I gave the cubes famous actors names in the credits list. You can watch and rate this video on YouTube. the unexpected visitor http://www.raffaz.net/theunexpectedvisitor.php

this is a “found footage” video. I stumbled upon this old film inside the American Mutoscope & Biograph Company website, and I found it very interesting. I used a song by Peter Gabriel which has some very deep bass moments, and I slowed down the video in sync. The video is quite straightforward, the only compositing work has been made on the titles, where I matched the grain and film look of the original footage. But the interesting part is after the end titles, I wanted it this way and I find it very ironic. I hope you'll find it funny. spain http://www.raffaz.net/spain.php

I spent 9 days in Spain, visiting cities such as Cordoba, Sevilla, Valencia, Barcelona, Granada and others. I really like the ancient buildings of the Moorish period — they are so different from everything else, and their geometric design is fascinating. Of course I also fell in love with modern architecture like Santiago Calatrava's works which looks so organic yet clean and smooth at the same time. In these photos you can also see my first experiments with HDR photography, which I think is a really great and innovative technique — I want to continue experimenting with it. this video was part of a collective project called “Times”, a multiple video installation which took part at Kunst Merano Arte in winter 2004. My contribute was this video, which used the famous Tetris™ game as a base for a lot of videos. A lot of compositing work was required to obtain the right effect like in the game. The pieces of videos could look small, but remember this was projected on a big wall. All the video pieces come from the web, and I selected particular themes. And if you look carefully, you can also see Peter Gabriel, Steve Jobs and Jonathan Ive among the videos — a sort of Easter Egg. guarda lontano — dvd packaging http://www.raffaz.net/guardalontanodvd.php

This is a DVD packaging that I designed as a complement to my bachelor at CAMPIVISIVI. I used a transparent envelope made of AirCap, and a thick printed cardboard as a DVD holder. I wanted to optimize logistic and duplication costs, so you can use the bubble air envelope just like a normal envelope — stick the address and the stamp, and it's ready to be sent by mail. Using the two sides of the cardboard allowed to put the two discs, but also offered lot of usable space for text, avoiding an external booklet. This particular design keeps the packaging weight to a minimum, and offers a pleasant tactile feedback to the user. You can also see the intro title from Guarda Lontano. the netherlands http://www.raffaz.net/netherlands.php

I visited The Netherlands twice in 2005, and I really like this little country. There's a nice mix of tradition and modernism, both in architecture and in people (needless to say, I prefer modernism). Baarlo is a small town, with lots of green space and deep into the country — I liked its tiny streets, the little houses, the mix of colors. Amsterdam is really big, but it's such an amazing city that you can almost breathe this different culture. There are a lot of interesting places, too bad I only spent a couple of days there. These photos were used in the company profile and as promotional photos for the website and press releases. You can also check my work on the video of the “Monaldi” project. multiverso — icograda design week torino 2008 http://www.raffaz.net/multiverso.php

Multiverso was a design event held in Torino, Italy by Icograda and AIAP. During the week of October 13–19, 2008 several international speakers held conferences and workshops about design, typography, architecture, multimedia and surrounding themes. I was in charge for the video and photo documentation of the event. In this page you can see photos for each of the speakers. You can also see my work on the Multiverso videos. You can see more photos on my Multiverso Flickr set, and check out the backstage on my grigioneutro post. Copyright © 2008 Raffaele Mariotti
